You leave before the village lights fade — a small convoy of private cars threading the black shoulder of Bali toward Kintamani. On the trail the ground crunches under headlamps; the air smells faintly of volcanic steam. By the time you reach the rim, the sun is pushing itself up over Lake Batur, painting the crater and surrounding ridges in hard gold as steam from fumaroles rises and seems to stretch toward the light.
