You arrive before dawn, headlights cutting through mist as a 4x4 bumps along the volcanic road toward Mount Batur’s sunrise drop-off. Cold air bites at your neck; below, Lake Batur is a dark bowl catching the first pale gold. The jeep settles and you watch the ridge silhouette split open with light—clouds roll like a slow sea, the caldera’s rim sharpening into cliffs and terraces.
