Before dawn the jeep rumbles out of Ubud and the road narrows into a dark ribbon across farmland and lava-scarred slopes. At 1,365 meters the air sharpens; the caldera waits like a cutaway of the island, Lake Batur glassy below and the active cone of Mount Batur rising black against the first light. You watch the sun push up over distant peaks while the driver parks on the rim—breakfast and hot tea handed up onto the jeep roof, steam and coffee competing with the cold.
