Before the sky brightens, a line of headlamps threads up black volcanic ash and loose rock — the mountain seems to breathe around you as you climb. The route out of Toya Bungkah Village is a steady pull through moonlit terraces, through the scent of coffee drying at roadside stalls, until the summit widens and the horizon begins to thaw orange.
