Mount Batur’s repeated eruptions have reshaped the caldera over millennia; the nearby temple dates to local water-cult practices tied to the Balinese subak irrigation system.
Visitors should stick to paths and avoid littering; the caldera’s fragile soils and temple environment are vulnerable to erosion and cultural disruption.
