You start before dawn, engine rumbling as a 4WD climbs narrow trails beneath a canopy of stars. The jeep cuts through cool mountain air toward 1,200 meters and a sunrise point that opens onto the caldera—Lake Batur below, Mount Agung and Mount Abang across the horizon, and on clear mornings the distant flank of Rinjani on Lombok.
