Dawn in Jackson Hole arrives cool and clear, light pooling in the trough between craggy Tetons and sagebrush flats. On a morning wildlife tour you move quietly in a small group, windows down, binoculars raised as elk and bison graze in the lowlands and a moose picks its way along a willow patch. The guide times stops for short walks and long views, placing the animals in the sweep of the mountains.

The Tetons rose on a fault block while Indigenous Shoshone people and later Euro-American ranchers shaped seasonal movement through the valley; the National Elk Refuge preserves key winter range.
Visitors are asked to stay on roads or guided routes to protect wintering elk and riparian zones; local operators support leave-no-trace practices and wildlife-safe viewing distances.
