You step off the train into cool air and the bamboo avenue immediately tightens the world to a green corridor. Sunlight threads down between towering stalks that sway like a quiet crowd, and the Hozu River ahead pushes the valley’s pace along its rocky bed. This half-day morning walk moves steadily through Arashiyama’s best-known scenes—Sagano Bamboo Grove, Tenryu-ji’s Zen garden, Togetsukyo Bridge—and, depending on season, the mossy slopes of Jojakko-ji or the hilltop terraces of Okochi Sanso Villa.
moderate.
4 hours.
Moderate fitness: comfortable standing and walking for several hours and managing short stair sections.
Expect about 3 km of walking over mostly paved paths with occasional stairs; the tour duration is about 4 hours including transport and stops.
The boat ride is included on many 2025 departures outside of the summer window (July 2–Sept 22), when the itinerary changes and the cruise is typically excluded.
There are benches and temple seating along the route, but public transport portions use non-reserved seating where standing is possible during busy times.
Children are welcome; ages 0–5 may be free if they don’t occupy a separate seat, but participants under 15 must be accompanied by a guardian.
Arashiyama has been a leisure and viewing area for Kyoto aristocracy since the Heian period; many temples and bridges date to centuries of garden design that emphasize borrowed scenery from surrounding hills.
High visitor numbers stress narrow paths and bamboo roots; follow marked trails, avoid stepping off paths, and carry out waste to protect fragile moss gardens and riverbanks.
