A cold breath of glacier-steeped air lifts off Upper Trail Lake as you push from the shore behind Trail Lake Lodge. The water takes the paddle’s rhythm and carries you under the sharp profile of the Chugach Mountains; the lake’s green is vivid enough to feel like a separate world. For four hours you alternate between the deliberate stroke of a kayak and the steady cadence of boots on a primitive trail, moving deeper into a landscape that only foot or floatplane usually reaches.
moderate.
4 hours.
Moderate cardiovascular fitness and basic paddling/hiking ability; comfortable with short stretches of uneven trail.
The itinerary includes about 1 mile of paddling on Upper Trail Lake and roughly 1 mile of hiking to Grant Lake each way—total around 2 miles paddling and 2 miles hiking over the half day.
No advanced experience is required, but comfortable balance and basic paddling skills help; guides provide instruction and safety gear, including life jackets.
Age restrictions vary—confirm with the operator, but families with older children who can follow safety instructions typically join; weight/size limits may apply for gear.
Expect signs of moose and possibly eagles or waterfowl; sightings of bears are possible in the region so guides maintain safe distances and protocols.
The route follows a portion of the Iditarod National Historic Trail and passes lands long traveled by the Dena’ina people; later, miners and mushers used these corridors during frontier periods.
Grant Lake and Upper Trail Lake are sensitive glacial-fed systems—stick to trails, pack out waste, and avoid disturbing shoreline vegetation to protect water quality and habitat.
