Monterey M4 Bareboat Charter on Lake Minnetonka — Excelsior Day Cruises with First Mate

On Lake Minnetonka in Excelsior, Minnesota, the Bareboat Charter with First Mate — Monterey M4 offers a polished, do-it-yourself boating day with a safety net: an experienced first mate aboard to assist and teach while you focus on cruising. The town of Excelsior sits on the lake’s south shore, a compact harbor town that serves as a gateway to the lake’s network of bays, islands, and shallow sandbars. This charter runs 2–8 hours and accommodates up to 12 guests, making it ideal for family outings, celebrations, or a relaxed afternoon of anchor-and-swim.

The Monterey M4 is designed for comfort and confident handling. With sleek lines, roomy seating, and an upscale cockpit layout, it glides across the glacially carved basin of Lake Minnetonka—an irregular lake shaped by retreating ice that left rocky points, wooded shorelines, and sheltered coves. The experience blends hands-on boating—license required—with guided support from a first mate who helps with docking, navigation, and local tips. Note the 2,100 lb weight limit and that the meeting point is provided before your rental.

Key features of the scene include broad open water for cruising, intimate tree-lined bays for anchoring, and numerous islands that form natural wind breaks. You’ll notice geologic hints of the lake’s origin in the exposed bedrock near shore and scattered sandy shoals that make local navigation part of the fun. Expect to watch for common local wildlife—loons calling at dawn, osprey hovering above shallow flats, and the occasional bald eagle cruising the shoreline.

Excelsior’s history as a late-19th-century resort destination still shapes the lakeside culture: boat culture, street-level dining, and public docks that invite day-trippers. That heritage pairs well with a modern boat like the Monterey M4, which feels equally at home cruising past historic boathouses or slipping into a quiet cove for a picnic.

What sets this charter apart is the balance between autonomy and support. You can take the helm with confidence, learn skills on the water, and keep the day flexible—anchor for a swim, visit a waterfront restaurant, or simply follow a sunset cruise. Practical details are straightforward: bring layered clothing for changing winds, a valid boating license, and a plan for fuel or provisioning if you extend beyond a few hours. For anyone visiting Excelsior who wants secure, stylish access to Lake Minnetonka, this charter is a standout choice.

Expect a short safety briefing at check-in and an on-water walkthrough with your first mate, who will demonstrate lines, docking techniques, and anchoring in shallow coves. The flexible 2–8 hour window lets you build a plan: a two-hour loop for scenic cruising, a half-day with a lakeside lunch at one of Excelsior’s waterfront restaurants, or an all-day exploration that hits hidden sandbars and shoreline parks.
