Montego Bay developed from 18th- and 19th-century sugar plantations and grew into a port town; the Hip Strip evolved later as a tourist-focused waterfront avenue.
The area’s shallow reefs are sensitive—use reef-safe sunscreen, avoid touching coral, and follow guides to minimize disturbance.
