Other

The boat shudders as it slips past the sun-glinting shoulders of Montego Bay and the coastline falls away into an expanse of blue that dares you to look deeper. On a clear morning the sea is a glass mirror; a few minutes out, it becomes a page ripped open to reveal coral walls, shadowed canyons and the skeletal outline of wrecks that have rested on the shelf for decades. Your master diver briefs the group, pointing to a chart of two dive sites: one a steep coral wall streaked with parrotfish and cleaner wrasse, the other a sculpted underwater canyon with pockets of light that turn into small caves.

Adventure Tips

Bring your dive certification card

Evidence of your PADI/CMAS/NAUI card is required at check-in—no certification, no certified dive.

Use reef-safe sunscreen and a rash guard

Protect skin from sun on the boat and the reef from oxybenzone-based sunscreens—the operator enforces marine-park-friendly practices.

Hydrate and avoid flying soon after diving

Drink water before and after dives and don’t plan air travel within 48 hours of your last dive to reduce decompression risk.

Know your limits underwater

These sites include walls, wrecks and cave-like canyons—good buoyancy and comfort on deeper or slightly current-swept dives will keep the experience safe and enjoyable.

History

Montego Bay’s reefs fall within an effort to protect coastal marine habitat—the Montego Bay Marine Park was established to manage tourism and fishing impacts while preserving reef systems.

Conservation

An Environmental Management Charge (reef tax) is collected to fund conservation; divers are expected to practice no-touch, no-take ethics and use reef-safe sunscreen.
