You push off from a shaded bank and the raft answers with a slow, steady glide; the Lethe River seems to welcome you with a low reggae beat and the scent of damp limestone. Trees lean close over the channel, their roots tracing the current, and your captain reads the river like a map—steering around shallow riffles and pointing out bright kingfishers that flash and vanish.
