You step out of the air-conditioned van and the air changes — warm, dust-sweet and heavy with distant trumpets. The road to Minneriya loosens into scrub and paddy, then opens onto a flat, shimmering basin where the reservoir pulls wildlife into a single arena. Herds of Asian elephants roam the shoreline like weathered boulders coming to life: calves weaving between tusked adults, bulls picking their way through grass, trunks exploring the water’s edge.
