You push off from Quito's altiplano and, within an hour and a half, the air changes—thickening into cloud, the scent of wet earth and orchids rising. The tarabita cable car slices over a river canyon and the Nambillo Falls drops into a basin of clear pools that dare you to step closer. Birds flit through moss-draped branches; a hummingbird hovers like a living jewel.
