A ribbon of boardwalk and compacted earth slips away from Sandfly Point and into primeval beech forest, the fiord walls dwarfing you to either side. The first steps feel public and cinematic — boats cutting across Deepwater Basin, a spray of seawater on your face — then quieter, as the Milford Track shifts tone. Ferns lift their fronds like hands; the trail threads through moss-draped trunks and over small streams that dare you to linger. Under two hours brings you to Giant Gate Falls, a white curtain that thunders against the rock face before it negotiates a final, delicate cascade into the valley below.
