The van hums away from Queenstown before dawn, leather seats warm under you and panoramic windows framing an island of low clouds over farmland. As you push south the road tightens into Fiordland—rivers begin to cut deeper, beech forest climbs out of the valleys and the air sharpens with rain. By the time you roll past Mirror Lakes and into the shadow of the Homer Tunnel the landscape has changed into the world the fiords made: jagged peaks, plunging waterfalls and a sound that seems to gather all water and sky.
