You pull out of Phoenix before sunrise, the city giving way to flat desert that slowly rises into pine-scattered highlands; by midmorning you're straddling two very different pieces of Arizona — the open rim of Walnut Canyon and the near-lunar lip of Meteor Crater.
moderate.
10–11 hours.
Moderate fitness: able to handle short hikes with steps and several hours on your feet plus time in a vehicle.
The private tour runs about 10–11 hours from Phoenix and includes stops at Walnut Canyon (short hikes), Meteor Crater (viewing platform and museum) and a lunch/visit in Winslow.
Admissions are included as noted in the itinerary; the tour provides access to visitor facilities and the crater’s viewing platform and museum.
Rim Trail is 0.7 mile with some elevation change and steps (about 30 minutes); Island Trail is roughly 1 mile with steeper sections—moderate exertion recommended.
Infants and small children can be accommodated; however, strollers are not ideal on the Island Trail—bring a carrier for steeper or uneven sections.
Walnut Canyon preserves cliff dwellings from ancestral Puebloan communities (C.E. 600–1400), while Meteor Crater is an intact Pleistocene impact site that later served as an Apollo training ground.
Stay on designated trails and observation platforms to protect fragile archaeological sites and the crater’s rim; pack out waste and respect museum rules to minimize impact.
