You step off the hot asphalt into the salty hush of Makena Landing Park, where the ocean stretches flat and approachable like a painted sheet. The instructor waits on the grass with a tail at hand; beyond them, Haleakala's rim and the silhouette of Molokini punctuate the skyline. The cove here is protected—shallow, glassy on good days—and the water seems to invite experimentation rather than challenge.
