Meritage is a made-up American word that means more than one grape varietal in the bottle. Learn how Meritage was created, what grapes can be used, and how to pronounce it. In the 1980s, American winemakers could lay claim to some high quality, high value wines. American Winemakers doing pretty much exactly what they do in Bordeaux: blending wines from a variety of grapes. By the late 80s, American winemakers were tired of naming their best wines “table wine” (a government regulation).
