A hush falls as the boat slips into Melissani’s cavern, sunlight fracturing through a collapsed roof and turning the lake into a moving pool of turquoise. You feel the cave breathe—water rising and falling with a slow, geological rhythm—while the guide eases you beneath stalactites and toward the bright oval where sky and sea-light meet.

4 hours.
Suitable for most fitness levels; involves short, flat walks and boarding a small boat.
The tour runs about four hours, typically splitting time between a boat ride in Melissani and beach time at Myrtos.
Boat access to Melissani’s inner lake is part of the visit, though public cave entry can be regulated—your guide handles boarding and timing.
Yes; the beach is public and safe for swimmers, but entry is over pebbles so water shoes are recommended; there are no lifeguards in peak summer at all times.
The tour is family-friendly with short walks; however, boarding the small cave boat and navigating pebbled shoreline may be harder for those with mobility limitations.
Melted seas and tectonic uplift shaped Kefalonia’s karst landscape; Melissani formed when a cave roof collapsed centuries ago and local lore linked the hollow to river deities.
Myrtos’ pebbles and the cave environment are sensitive—stick to marked paths, avoid littering and use reef-safe sunscreens to reduce impact.
