You begin with the engine’s rumble cutting through coconut groves, the cone of Mayon rising like a challenge in the rearview. Dust lifts off lahar plains as your ATV threads rivers and gullies; the air tastes faintly of ash and wet soil. About 200 meters from the 2018 lava flow, the trail opens to a raw, rocky foreground where the volcano seems to loom closer than maps suggest.
