The helicopter lifts from Bern-Belp and within minutes the city grid drops away, replaced by a carved world of blue lakes and serrated ridgelines. From the open windows of the aircraft the Matterhorn appears like a sharp, solitary tooth — its faces throwing hard shadows on glaciers that still cling to high shoulders. Lakes such as Thun and Oeschinensee flash turquoise beneath, while the Rhone threads a silver line through Valais, daring the pilot to follow the valley.
