ASA’s Advanced Surf Coaching sessions are for surfers who are ready to push past their plateaus and learn how to truly rip.
Led by ASA’s Head Coach—personally mentored by former WQS pro surfer Clayton Nienaber—these sessions deliver the same proven coaching system Clayton developed for world-class athletes. You’ll focus on the fundamentals that make the biggest difference: equipment, wave choice, mindset, and technique. The result? A clearer path to unlocking your surfing potential.
Each session combines both water and beach coaching to maximise your progress. You’ll work through tailored drills and exercises designed specifically for your surfing, while every wave is recorded for later review. That way, you’ll clearly see what’s working, what needs refining, and the exact steps to keep improving.
Advanced surf coaching at ASA is both challenging and fun—the perfect way to progress your surfing alongside a crew of like-minded surfers. Whether you bring a mate or come solo, you’ll walk away with new skills, new confidence, and a whole new outlook on your surfing.
Each Advanced Coaching session is structured to give you the maximum impact in a focused block of time:
1.5-hour coached surf session (mix of in-water and beach coaching)
Tailored drills and exercises designed for your surfing goals
Full video recording of your waves for analysis
30-minute video review and takeaway discussion — clear feedback on what worked, what to adjust, and the next steps in your surfing journey
This coaching system, developed by Clayton Nienaber and delivered by ASA’s Head Coach, has helped world-class surfers such as Jordy Smith, Travis Logie, and Ricky Basnett, as well as the South African Surfing Team. Now it’s adapted to your level, so you can experience the same proven methods and keep progressing every session.
Always review the daily surf and tide reports before heading out to ensure the waves are suitable for advanced maneuvers.
Spend at least 10 minutes stretching and warming up on the beach to prepare your muscles for the demanding session.
Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated during breaks, especially in the warm Queensland sun.
Protect your skin and the marine environment by applying reef-safe sunscreen before the session.
Palm Beach’s surf culture dates back to the 1960s when it became a favored spot for local and visiting surfers, influencing the Gold Coast’s surfing reputation.
