12-Month Access to Online Course
Embark on an engaging online journey with the Day Skipper Theory course, designed for aspiring skippers. Dive into coastal navigation, meteorology, and seamanship through self-paced modules and practical assessments. Gain essential skills and confidence to safely plan day passages, all while receiving instructor support and access to valuable resources.
An online, exam-focused introduction to navigation, pilotage, meteorology and seamanship for aspiring skippers preparing for the RYA Day Skipper practical course (sail or motor). The programme builds the core knowledge you’ll use to plan and execute safe day passages in familiar coastal waters.
No formal prerequisites. Some practical sailing experience is desirable, and this course is the ideal preparation before taking the Day Skipper Practical (which has limited time for theory).
Self-paced online study with structured modules, worked examples, practice questions and mock papers. Learn at your own rhythm and revisit topics as needed.
You’ll complete final theory assessments (typically a Chartwork paper and a General paper) set and marked by the training centre. On successful completion you receive the RYA Day Skipper Shorebased (Theory) certificate—the recognised knowledge standard for the practical course.
Complete this theory course before your practical week. The practical is hands-on and assumes you already have Day Skipper-level theory; there is little time to teach or revise classroom topics afloat.
Instructor support is available while you study—use it to check your working, unblock tricky questions and stay on track.
If you can commit the time above, this course will give you the Day Skipper theory foundation—and the confidence—to plan and skipper safe day passages in familiar waters.
Need extra support? You can book one-to-one classes:
