Day Skipper Theory Online — Coastal Navigation & Seamanship

Overview

An online, exam-focused introduction to navigation, pilotage, meteorology and seamanship for aspiring skippers preparing for the RYA Day Skipper practical course (sail or motor). The programme builds the core knowledge you’ll use to plan and execute safe day passages in familiar coastal waters.

Is this course for you?

No formal prerequisites. Some practical sailing experience is desirable, and this course is the ideal preparation before taking the Day Skipper Practical (which has limited time for theory).

Time commitment & difficulty

  • Study time: ~40 hours of learning plus exam time A solid, hands-on course with multi-step problems and applied tasks.

  • Course language: English
  • Recommended level: B1–B2 to follow explanations, technical terms and assessment wording accurately.

You’ll complete final theory assessments (typically a Chartwork paper and a General paper) set and marked by the training centre. On successful completion you receive the RYA Day Skipper Shorebased (Theory) certificate—the recognised knowledge standard for the practical course.

Complete this theory course before your practical week. The practical is hands-on and assumes you already have Day Skipper-level theory; there is little time to teach or revise classroom topics afloat.
