FAQs:

What happens if we don’t see whales on our trip?

  • Captain John Boats has a 99% success rate for seeing whales on all our trips! In the rare instance we don’t see a whale, we will provide a complimentary pass for you to join us on a future trip of your choice. We do not offer cash refunds.

Are there restrooms on the boats?

  • All our boats are equipped with men’s and ladies’ restrooms, regularly cleaned and maintained by our crew.

What do I need to bring for whale watching?

  • The temperature on the water is typically about 10 to 15 degrees cooler than on land, so you will likely want to bring a light sweatshirt or jacket, even if it’s warm on land. You may also want to pack a rain jacket in case the weather takes a turn. Other things you’ll want to bring include a camera to get great shots of the whales, binoculars for a closer view, sunglasses and sunscreen. We recommend wearing sneakers or closed-toe shoes aboard the boat for safety reasons.

How long are whale watching tours?

  • Our whale watching tours typically last 3.5 hours, depending on the location of the whales. We want to give you a good amount of time to spend in the presence of these majestic creatures, so the total tour time varies depending on how long it takes us to get to the whales’ location.

What types of whales are there in Cape Cod Bay?

  • Our whale watching tours involve heading out to Cape Cod Bay and Stellwagen Bank, a marine sanctuary and one of the primary feeding grounds for humpback whales, finback whales, minke whales, and the endangered right whales. Our naturalists will tell you more about these types of whales throughout the tour, identifying which species of whale you are viewing and providing educational information about their habits.

Can we buy food and beverages on the boat? We offer full galley service on board where you can purchase hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza, and a variety of snacks. Hot and cold beverages are available, and those 21 and over can purchase alcoholic beverages. Our state liquor license prohibits you from bringing your own alcohol on the boat. Please note the galley on board is CASH ONLY.

Please be early for your departure! You’ll want to get to our dock with time to spare to board our vessel and make yourself comfortable. Allow about 60 minutes for ticketing and boarding.

For more information about parking and boarding times, please see the instructions included in your confirmation email after purchasing your tickets.
