Read the full experience

Lake Taupō, New Zealand’s largest freshwater lake, is a natural wonder carved by ancient volcanic activity, offering more than just vast waters—it hosts one of the country’s most distinctive cultural landmarks. Taupo Sailing Adventures invites travelers to experience this unique fusion of natural beauty and Māori heritage aboard their luxury 53-foot catamaran, Tiua. This sunset sailing trip is a rare chance to see the iconic Māori Rock Carvings at Mine Bay, monumental figures etched directly into sheer volcanic cliffs along the lake’s edge. Measuring 14 meters tall, these carvings are only accessible by water, making this an exclusive encounter tied deeply to local iwi (tribe) stories and artistry. Guests board the sleek Tiua at Taupō Marina, settling into spacious, weatherproof indoor lounges or the covered deck, perfect for soaking in panoramic lake views. The eco-conscious vessel glides silently by the wind, minimizing environmental impact and enhancing the connection to this pristine aquatic landscape. As the sun dips low, the experienced crew shares insights about the lake’s volcanic origins and the cultural significance of the carvings, weaving history into the unfolding twilight. A highlight of the trip is a chance to swim in the remarkably clear, mineral-rich waters of Lake Taupō—conditions permitting—a refreshing and unforgettable experience. Complimentary refreshments, including a local drink and pizza, offer a well-earned treat while watching pastel-colored skies reflect off the lake. With a maximum of 35 passengers, the atmosphere balances conviviality with intimate comfort. Taupo Sailing Adventures stands out not only for its luxurious approach but also for its dedication to showcasing Taupō’s natural and cultural treasures responsibly.
