A cold dawn on the trail outside Samagaon puts the massif of Manaslu into sharp relief — a hulking wall of ice and rock that seems to breathe frost. You shoulder a pack, cross wooden bridges where the Budi Gandaki dares you to hurry, and climb through rhododendron forests that gradually yield to moraine and wind-scoured alpine slopes.
