A narrow track drops away from Maun and, within an hour, the sky opens — an ocean of stars that looks as if someone turned up the brightness. By day the salt crust of Makgadikgadi stretches flat and white, daring your eyes to find scale; by night the same flatness becomes a planetarium free of light pollution.
