Stepping into the second-floor studio at the Queen Kaahumanu Center, the smell of warm wood and island air meets a table laid out with dark kukui nuts and braided cord. The instructor moves deliberately, offering the first nuts and a short story about the tree that once stood in Hawaiian yards as both medicine and lamp. Guests sit shoulder-to-shoulder in a relaxed circle; the work is tactile and chatty, the finished bracelets immediate keepsakes.
