The engine thumps beneath your seat and the island's north shore opens into a succession of sheltered bays—white sand hunkered against volcanic headlands, cliffs freckled with pandanus and eucalyptus. You thread between turquoise fingers of reef, cut past Balding Bay into Radical Bay, and coast the Five Bays chain where cliffs and coves change the light every few minutes.
