A bus pulls away from Funchal and the city’s tile roofs shrink as the road climbs toward Cabo Girão. The cliff meets the Atlantic with a cold, vertical authority; wind tugs at jackets and the ocean dares you to step closer to the glass viewpoint. From that perch, terraces of vines and banana groves roll northward like a patchwork stitched into steep volcanic slopes.
