You start before dawn, headlamp cones puncturing a sky thick with stars as the island’s shoulders melt into darkness. The trail climbs steadily for 2.5 kilometers, each step moving you out of the shadowed laurisilva and toward Ruivo Peak—the highest point on Madeira—where the horizon waits to be rewritten by light.
