Macramé Plant Hanger Workshop on Lagendijk — Make Your Own in Koog aan de Zaan

Workshop Macramé (plantenhanger) sits on Lagendijk 3 in Koog aan de Zaan, Noord-Holland, Netherlands. In a bright, accessible atelier on the canal, this 2½-hour class teaches visitors to knot their own macramé plant hanger. The room is arranged with communal worktables, plentiful cotton cord in twelve vibrant colors, wooden rings, scissors, and an instructor who walks each student through the same reliable sequence of knots. The experience is tactile, social, and satisfyingly practical: beginners master three core knots, learn correct cord lengths for load-bearing structure, and discover simple decorative combinations that produce a secure planter. Color options include naturel, geel, grijs, bruin, oranje, rood, roze, olijfgroen, groen, donkergroen, blauw, and zwart so you can match a balcony or living room palette. Group size is intentionally small — four to eight participants — which keeps instruction personal and allows one-on-one adjustments; workshops proceed only with a minimum of four attendees. What makes this workshop distinctive in the Zaan area is how the craft connects to place. The atelier fronts the Lagendijk canal and faces the region’s historic timber façades; the Zaan valley’s early industrial heritage—wind-powered sawmills and wood-working industries dating to the 17th century—hangs quietly in the background. During breaks you can watch mute swans and occasional kingfishers on the water, then walk a short distance to the Zaans Museum or the quieter corners of Zaanse Schans for traditional windmills and wood-clad houses. Logistics are straightforward: no prior experience required; the atelier is wheelchair accessible; expect to spend about two and a half hours. Bring comfortable clothing and steady hands; scissors are provided but you may prefer to bring a pair you know. By the end, you take home a finished hanger and the practical skills to make more at home. Beyond technique, the workshop offers a moment of slow, focused making amid a working canal neighborhood. For travelers based in Zaandam or passing through Amsterdam, it’s an easy, restorative half-day activity that balances craft, local history, and a direct, usable souvenir. For locals it’s an afternoon of creativity and new friends. Knot by knot, this simple craft echoes the Zaan region’s long relationship with wood and handmade objects, making Workshop Macramé (plantenhanger) a quietly original stop for anyone seeking creative, place-driven experiences. The class is especially good for travelers who want to bring back something more personal than a postcard. In addition to plant hangers the instructor often demonstrates simple variations—short macramé wall hangings and key-chain tassels—that travelers can learn quickly with leftover cord.
