Lyon grew from the Roman city of Lugdunum and later became a European center for silk weaving; its traboules—covered passageways—were historically used by silk workers to move goods between buildings.
The city manages preservation zones in Vieux Lyon and encourages pedestrian routes to reduce traffic impact; visitors are asked to respect private courtyards and historic fabric.
