Embark on a luxury catamaran trip across Banderas Bay. Just as Puerto Vallarta idyllic weather welcomes visitors from around the world, the warm and waters of the Bay of Banderas are a favorite destination for humpback whales. The whales travel more than 3,000 miles from the Gulf of Alaska to the Bay of Banderas, then stay for a lengthy vacation, frolicking just off our shores and delighting spectators from December through March. You will also likely see dolphins, sea turtles, manta rays and a variety of seabirds.
Adult males humpbacks range from 40 to 52 feet and can weigh up to 45 tons. Despite their size, humpback whales are graceful acrobats. Keep your eye on the ocean and you might see one breach, propelling up to 40 percent of its body out of the water and landing on its side with a spectacular splash.
A good pair of binoculars will help spot whales farther from the boat when they surface briefly.
The boat deck offers limited shade; apply sunscreen and wear a hat to stay protected under the strong Mexican sun.
Carry a reusable water bottle to stay refreshed during the 4-hour tour.
Early mornings can be cool while midday gets warm; layering helps you stay comfortable.
Banderas Bay has been a crucial migratory and breeding ground for humpback whales for centuries, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage marine site buffer.
Tours here follow COA (Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas) regulations to ensure minimal impact on wildlife and promote awareness of marine ecosystems.
