The first strokes of the day land with a slap of cold water as the raft slips from the shore and the New River dares you downstream. Cliff faces rise to the right and left—sandstone walls cut nearly 1,000 feet high—while the famous single-arch New River Gorge Bridge holds itself over the current like a watchful neighbor.
