The engine settles into a steady growl and the dunes push and pull beneath the Can-Am as riders peel away from the staging area, sand kicking like a living thing behind them. Guides form a staggered line and the group threads narrow desert washes, cresting sandy ridgelines that open onto sharp ocean cliffs. The sea smells salt-bright; the desert smells sun-baked and resinous — both territories testing different parts of the rider.
