Morning light unrolls across the Loire as a small minivan pulls away from Tours, vineyards and wheat fields sliding past like pages in a history book. Within an hour you step onto the gravel forecourt of Château de Chambord, its crenellated roofline and double-helix staircase rising from the clearing; the forest around it still remembers the hunts of French kings. Later the tour crosses the Cher to Chenonceau, a Renaissance bridge-palace that arches over the river, its galleries daring the current beneath.
