The paddle begins where the ramp eases into a dark, slow-moving channel and the trees lean in as if listening. Guides fit life jackets and hand out paddles, then lead small groups into Lofton Creek, a blackwater ribbon that threads between bald cypress knees and sweet gum trunks. Water tinted by tannins moves with a deliberate, patient rhythm that seems to push paddlers forward.
