Students begin with theory and confined water sessions at the dive shop, then step aboard short boat rides that deliver them quickly to reef sites on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. The local underwater landscape is dominated by hard coral formations including staghorn and elkhorn colonies, living limestone outcrops, reef walls, and pocketed coral gardens. Clear, warm water and visibility that often exceeds twenty meters make coral textures and schooling fish vivid; expect parrotfish, sergeant majors, and the occasional spotted eagle ray to appear during training dives.
