Hydrate and rest before surface sessions
Avoid alcohol and get a good night’s sleep—your body equalizes and performs better when rested and hydrated, which reduces risk of ear problems and fatigue.
Master basic swim skills first
Be comfortable swimming and treading water; the course assumes basic swimming ability and instructors spend less time on fundamentals if you’re already fit.
Bring reef-safe sunscreen
Protect the marine environment by using reef-safe sunscreen before arriving and reapplying with a towel on deck rather than in the water.
Pack motion-sickness remedies
Short boat rides can be bumpy for new divers—bring preventive medication or acupressure bands if you’re prone to seasickness.
Swimsuit & rash guard
Wear comfortable swimwear and a rash guard for sun and chafe protection during surface intervals.
Mask, snorkel and fins (rental often available)
