The valleys were sparsely populated until the 19th century, when the production of Iron and the mining of coal became the dominant industries throughout the area. This meant people were attracted from far and wide to work in these large industries. The Valleys are defined by the ribbons of terraced houses that line the valley sides. Around one third of all Welsh people live in the valleys and they have had a cultural impact that has far outweighed these numbers.
The valleys have defined Wales with images of coal miners, rugby players, and male voice choirs. Since the demise of the coal industry the valleys have gone through some tough times in the last few years, but these resolute people still have a culture all of their own.
