About

Access Pinal Mountain from downtown and head up the Pinal foothill dirt route (MT-157). Cross through the junction and traverse the narrow winding road up the North face of the Pinal Mountain Range through Russell Gulch (FR-651). Careful of the narrow route and traffic, you will arrive at the location of the early mine camp of Sulphide del Rey - now a campground with facilities. This is a great place for a snack and the fresh smell of pine trees. Continuing on FR-651, stay left to the South side of the mountain as you climb toward Mineral Creek and incredible views as far as the eye can see! Look North again to recapture the trees as you near 6,500ft elevation and pass popular trailheads of Kellner, Ice House, and Six Shooter Canyons. At near 8,000ft you will drive through Ferndell. A group of privately permitted cabins over 100 years old and a couple small campgrounds perfect for lunch. Return the same way or explore the quiet spur of Madera Peak if time permits.
