AMMOUDARA BEACH - DAFNES - AMMOUDARA BEACH
There is one excursion every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Excursion: We will leave at 9:30 am and we finish at around 12:30 pm
We start west of Heraklion from the beach of Ammoudara and head south towards the hinterland of Crete. After leaving the urban area behind us we enter a rural area full of vineyards and olive groves. On one side of the route we can see the holy mountain of Yioukhta and on the other the highest mountain of Crete, Psiloritis. The first village we meet is Gournes and after a few kilometers is the village of Athanati. The road becomes uphill until we reach the almost uninhabited village of Xirolia. We then head west and after a few kilometers we reach the capital of wine in Crete, the village of Dafnes. Here the well-known wine festival takes place every year during the first week of July.
In this area there are the most wineries of the island that produce the best wines of Crete. Here we taste 5 different bottles of Cretan wine, accompanied by Cretan meze. After the tasting we leave the bikes there and go by car back to the starting point.
If it has rained recently, then we change the route, because the previous route has some dirt roads and there will be mud.
