About This Adventure

Embark on a captivating two-hour journey into the Viking age at Arkils Assembly Place, one of Sweden's best-preserved Viking parliaments. Guided by an expert, explore the intricate laws, societal structures, and rich history of the Vikings while enjoying a scenic escape from Stockholm. This tour takes you true the whole viking age but with a smaller focus on law and viking society!

We will visit one of the best preserved assembly places close to Stockholm, Arkils Assembly place. Here you can explore the viking life in Scandinavia with an expert guide. We will tell you about the viking age in general, the meeting place and its special functions and some viking laws that we know of. Also touch upon the Viking religion, runes, runestones, their ships when being down at the Vallentuna lakeside, their laws and more depending on what you want to know.

The site is situated 40min by bus from central Stockholm, To get to the site please go by public transportation. Take Stockholm central stations (T-centralen) red subway line towards Mörby centrum and leave at Dandryds Sjukhus. There you take bus 610 towards either Vallentuna station or Norrgården. You get of at the bus stop of Lovisedal after ca 25min. There you and the guide together walk towards the assembly place. The tour ends at the same bus stop as we meet.

NOTE that this tour might need to start earlier during october - february due to less light outside.

Arkils asembly dates to

  • 11th Century in Vallentuna, Sweden. Lord Ulf has recently died and his sons decides to build an assembly site to commemorate him.
  • The large Skålhamra kin can use an assembly site, not only to honor Ulf but also to consolidate their power in the region.
  • Assembly sites was the Vikings political and judicial centers.
  • The society was divided into “häraden” (juridical districts) which to some extent had the same function as today's Swedish municipalities.
