A low morning sun spills across the Great Rift Valley as the van rolls away from Nairobi, the city shrinking to a smear of dust and distant traffic. By mid-morning the landscape opens: acacia-studded plains, volcanic ridgelines and the silver skin of Lake Elementaita, where clouds and flocks trade places on the water.

Flamingo numbers fluctuate with water levels; dry-season months often concentrate birds on remaining shallows, though good sightings can occur year-round.
Lake Elementaita lies within the Great Rift Valley and has long been an important water and grazing resource for local Kalenjin and Maasai communities; colonial-era farms later shaped current land use patterns.
Soysambu Conservancy manages habitats around the lake to balance tourism and livestock grazing; flamingo populations are sensitive to water quality and changes in runoff, so low-impact viewing is encouraged.
