About This Adventure

Embark on an exhilarating horseback adventure up Contrabando Mesa, where you'll navigate rugged trails with breathtaking views of the Rio Grande. Perfect for adventurous riders, this experience combines stunning scenery with the thrill of riding along cliff edges. Requirements

  • Meet at our Lajitas Stables at 8:30am
  • Minimum Age: 12 Years Old. Please call the office if You have a 10 or 11 year old
  • Maximum Weight: 250 lbs
  • The rockiness & steepness of the trails require athleticism and GOOD balance from each rider
  • You MUST be able to mount your horse or mule by yourself with no assistance
  • Each rider must be comfortable & confident enough to control their horse or mule up & down the mountain
  • 2-3 Liters of water in handheld bottles per rider

About

  • A great choice for riders who have more experience in the saddle and/or have a big sense of adventure!!

  • Ride climbs up to around 500 feet above the stables on rugged & technical trails. These trails are more physically demanding of the rider, considered adventurous & scenic. Parts of the trail ride along the edge of cliffs.

  • Not for folks with a fear of heights or who are nervous about riding.

  • Climb to the top of Contrabando Mesa in Big Bend Ranch State Park for stunning views over the Rio Grande, then drop down to 'Lunchbox Canyon' for a shady spot for lunch...you'll love the lunch we pull out of the saddlebags!!

  • We ride horses AND mules!!

  • Your wranglers work for tips, so if you like your ride, kiss your horse and be sure to tip your guide!

Adventure Tips

Wear sturdy footwear

Closed-toe shoes with good grip are recommended for safety and comfort while riding.

Bring sun protection

Hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen are vital given the high desert sun exposure.

Stay hydrated

Carry plenty of water, especially during hot months, to stay refreshed throughout the ride.

Arrive early

Getting to the stables ahead of your scheduled ride ensures a relaxed start and fitting with the guides’ timing.
