A cold wind cuts across the aquamarine mirror of Laguna Parón as the road climbs out of the green Callejón de Huaylas. By mid-morning, trekkers step from a dusty dirt parking area onto a lakeshore trail; the water sits at 4,200 meters, and above it Pirámide de Garcilaso and other ice-capped summits loom, their faces bright with sun or shadow depending on the weather.

The guided program includes about 2 hours of lakeshore walking to the far end; total door-to-door time is around 8 hours including transport from Huaraz.
No formal experience is required, but travelers should be acclimatized to at least 3,100 m in Huaraz and comfortable walking at altitude.
