A cold wind threads the pines as the minivan climbs out of Rovaniemi toward Korouoma. The canyon opens like a raw cut in the earth — high cliffs, bare rock faces, and a river that dares you to follow its course. Walkers trade city light for a wilderness scale that reads in kilometres and meters: Korouoma runs roughly 30 km and plunges to about 130 m deep in places.
moderate.
9 hours.
Moderate fitness: able to hike uneven trails for 2–4 hours total and manage short elevation changes.
Transfers are approximately 1.5 hours to Korouoma, about 1 hour from Korouoma to Ranua Zoo, and roughly 1 hour back to Rovaniemi.
Yes—families are welcome; the canyon section is moderate, and Ranua offers a 2.5 km loop with sleds available for very small children.
In winter, microspikes and warm, waterproof clothing are strongly recommended; the operator may provide basic guidance but not specialized gear.
National park fees and a buffet lunch at Ranua Zoo are included in the tour price per the itinerary details.
Korouoma’s steep fracture valley is a product of bedrock faults and glacial erosion; the surrounding Koillismaa area has long been used for small-scale forestry and reindeer husbandry.
Both the canyon and Ranua Zoo emphasize minimal disturbance—stay on marked trails, pack out waste, and respect animal viewing distances to reduce stress on wildlife.
